If you are looking for some family fun during your Canada holidays then you should think about booking a stay in Toronto and spending a day at the Ontario Place amusement park. One of the best known theme parks in the country, Ontario Place has something for every family member to enjoy. From attractions designed especially for toddlers to terrifying roller coasters, the park is intended to be fun for people of all ages. When the park first opened in 1971, one of its attractions was particularly notable. The Cinesphere, a movie theatre housed in a futuristic looking dome, was the world’s first permanent IMAX cinema. The original intention was for people seated in the 752 armchairs in front of the huge screen to view short educational films and that type of movie is still shown today. However, the schedule now also has plenty of big-budget films on it and from May 2011, you will be able to enjoy features at the Cinesphere in 3D. If you were booking Canada holidays back when Ontario Place was first open, you may not have thought its meagre selection of attractions – the cinema, some pedalos, a marina and a concert venue – was really worth visiting. But the pace and scale of development at the park since then has been mightily impressive. The intrepid members of your family can now enjoy rides and water slides, while you can also take in a children’s show, cultural festival and an educational attraction during your day out. Foster Soak City is Toronto’s largest water park and is guaranteed to entertain both actual children and big kids with its combination of raft rides and water slides, as well as the exhilarating high-speed hydrofuge. There are also pools suitable for toddlers to play in. If water parks aren’t your thing, you may prefer to try the Free Fall, Wilderness Adventure Ride and a stunning Tyrannosaurus Rex motion simulator experience in the FX Adventure Theatre. Families can enjoy some activities together at Ontario Place, with the interactive and educational Wild World Of Weather attraction well worth a visit. There are also mini golf and basketball games to try, or you may prefer to spend an hour or two exploring the Riverwalk Fish Habitat to see the turtles and ducks. If you have taken young children on your holiday to Canada, you will find you are well catered for at Ontario Place. There is a Microkids creativity centre where you can leave toddlers to play for a couple of hours, or you can watch them tire themselves out at the H2O Generation Station – the largest outdoor soft play area in the country. Your kids may also enjoy one of the shows at the Treehouse Live! Stage, an outdoor theatre that has regular performances from popular children’s characters such as Bob the Builder and Thomas the Tank Engine. It is not the only outdoor stage at Ontario Place, as the park is also home to one of Toronto’s largest live music venues. The Molson Canadian Amphitheatre plays host to some of the world’s biggest acts throughout the summer, so you may be lucky enough to time your visit to Toronto to coincide with an appearance by one of your favourite bands. Ontario Place is situated on the water itself, on a number of artificial islands and pods that are secured to the bottom of the lake. That means you can enjoy a unique and uninterrupted view over the water, the nearby Toronto cityscape and the local countryside.
Located just a few miles from the city centre, the park opens its doors in May every year and stays open until October. That should ensure you can enjoy your day of family fun in good weather, but don’t worry too much if it rains, as park bosses will give you a free ticket to come back the next day if the heavens open for more than an hour.
Stage West Mississauga
If you get an hour or two away from the children during your Canada holidays you may enjoy a stroll around the park and taking in the stunning views over Lake Ontario and marvelling at the feat of engineering that allows the venue to exist.
