Electric Jenn-Air & Other Center Vent Stoves & Cooktops
These stoves are all repaired the same as above as far as elements, switches, & terminal blocks. Some Jenn-Airs will be coil elements, and others are glasstop, in either a cartridge style or traditional top style. Cartridge styles can be taken apart and repaired. Common to all styles, whether stove or cooktop, is that you have a vent and fan to contend with.
The fan and is usually mounted underneath in the cabinet if it is a cooktop or behind the access panel in the front of the stove. Jenn-Airs do not have bottom drawers on it’s stoves, but instead an access panel to gain access to the fan and vent. If you need to slide these stove units out, you usually need to un-hook the vent.
If your problem is vent not working, you have quick checks that can be done on both the fan and switch. At the fan, check for voltage, if no voltage is present at the fan, then the switch or wiring to your switch or wiring from your switch is the problem. If voltage is present at the fan and the fan is not running, the problem is in your fan. You can do an OHM test on the motor to verify your results. Of course, make sure the correct voltage is going to your stove or cooktop first.
Electric Induction Cooking
We at C’s Repair have not worked on any induction style cooking units. The technology has been around for awhile, but has been expensive. In the last few years, technology has finally started bring the price down and more units are being sold commercially and for the home.
An induction cooking element works differently then any other type of electric cooking. Instead of an element heating up, then heating a pot or pan, which then heats your food, an induction element heats the pan or pot directly. It uses sophisticated electronics to generate electromagnetism directly to your pan or pot. This energy is instantaneous and the heat is changed by changing the strength of the electromagnetic field.
The key to it’s cooking ability is to have the right kind of cookware. It does not have to be fancy, it just has to be magnetic material. The material has to be a “ferrous” material. A good iron or steel pot will work perfectly. Aluminum, copper, and pyrex will not work on a induction cooker. Also, as soon as you turn the element off or remove the pot/pan from the element, heat generation stops, and your element is basically cold. You can even put a twenty dollor bill between the element and your pan and it won’t burn.
It is a neat, efficient, and very fast way to heat/cook. As technology improves even more and prices drop more, you will start seeing more and more of these units. Both in cooktops and stoves.
Maintenance & Tips for Electric Stove Tops & Cooktops
Keep Unit Clean Nothing worse then raising a coil element style stove or cooktop and having to scrape an inch of grease, grime, and food out of the way so we can test something. This is also a fire hazard and a roach magnet. We have refused to work on units like this in the past.
Glasstop Stove Tops We think the glasstop stove or cooktop was invented to aid in cleaning. They are easier to keep clean. Use a good glass top cleaner cream to keep the shine to the glass. A paint scraper can also be used to get those heavy stuck on particles off.
To clean properly, after your stove has cooled slightly, rub the cleaner/cream onto the glass. Let it sit until it drys, like a wax. Take your scraper and scrape the cream off, then rinse with water and sponge. Your glass top will stay cleaner and look newer longer.
Glass tops do not cook like coil elements Most glasstop stoves and cooktops react differently then the coil elements. Most will heat up slower, while also cooling down slower. Some brands now have “power burners” and the like, that react better. We tell customers that once your pot has gotten to a boil and you want to switch to a simmer, it is best to actually slide the pot/pan off the element for a minute or two and let excess heat escape. Then put the pot/pan back on the element.
Pot size and Make Your cookware does make a difference on glasstop stoves and cooktops. Matching pot size with element size makes a big difference. Also, flatter the bottom of the pan/pot will also give you better cooking performance. Most glass top brands also void your warranty if you use cast iron pots & pans. They can easily scratch or break the glass.
