Gas Conversion of a Stove Top or Cooktop

A gas stove or cooktop are sold usually as “natural gas”. You can easily convert them to LP gas by changing the orifaces on the burners and flipping the stop spring in the gas regulator. This conversion can only be done by the customer or a licensed contractor. Most delivery people are not allowed to do it for liability insurance reasons.

On changing the burner orifaces, you need to follow the directions fully. Each oriface will have a specific value and must be put in the proper burner. If not, your flame will be either too high or too low. You will also have poor flame if the regulator spring is not flipped to the correct gas type.

Again, like the electric counterparts, the cartridges can be disassembled and repaired or purchased as a complete unit.

Gas Repair of Valves, Burners, Safety Valves, & Piping

If for any reason, you find yourself replacing any gas lines, valves, or burners, be very careful replacing them and follow a few tips.

Of course, make sure the gas is turned off. Use the right size wrench because brass and aluminum fittings strip very easy. Sometimes it is easy using a 2nd wrench as a support wrench. When re-installing parts, use gas teflon tape or approved sealant on all joints. Do not over tighten joints, again, brass and aluminum fittings strip very easy.

After you get all pipes and parts back together, turn gas back on and check for leaks at joints/connections. Use a gas soap/bubble mixture or a leak detection device to confirm no leaks.

Maintenance & Tips for Gas Stove Tops & Cooktops

Keep your stove top or cooktop clean Do not let grease and grime build up on your cooktop. It can effect the electric switches on your gas valves, your ignitor operation, and actual flame output. It is one of the biggest causes of gas cooktop repair.

Flame output If your flame starts becoming uneven or sporadic, take your burner apart and clean the pieces well. Make sure all holes and crevices are open to allow proper gas flow. Also, when you have these pieces off, you can cleanout the oriface hole. Look down the center of the burner, you will see a small hole, that is the oriface, where the gas actually comes out. You can take a safety pin and use the point to help clean that hole out. If you have a sealed burner, sometimes you can soak the whole unit in hot water then let air or blow dry completely.

Flame height or flame goes out easy Each valve usually has a flame height adjustment screw somewhere. Most of the time, there is a slotted screw inside the knob stem. You will need a very long, narrow straight screwdriver. Adjust either right or left until the flame is at a desired height. To test, turn knob quickly to high then to low, if the flame goes out, you need to raise the flame level. Also, make sure your burner is clean as described in last article.
